Why people come to India for heart surgery
Cardiac work is the largest single category of medical travel to India, and volume is the reason. The major centres here perform bypass and valve operations at a rate that most European units never approach, and the surgeons running them have usually done thousands of the specific operation you need.
That matters more than the country on the letterhead. When we shortlist a hospital for you we ask three questions: how many of this exact procedure the unit does annually, what its typical intensive care stay looks like, and whether the surgeon named on your quote is the one who will operate. We give you the answers in writing.
What actually changes the price
The stent or valve you receive is the single biggest factor. A drug-eluting stent and a bare-metal one differ substantially, as do mechanical and tissue valves, and the choice has consequences well beyond cost. Ask what is being recommended and what the alternative costs. We will get that for you in writing.
After that it is intensive care days, which nobody can promise in advance, and whether you need more than one thing done in the same operation. A bypass combined with a valve replacement costs more than a bypass alone, and far less than two separate trips.
How long you should plan to be here
Three to four weeks. Typically five to eight days in hospital after a bypass, then two to three weeks nearby before a cardiologist clears you to fly. Angioplasty patients often leave in two.
Flying too soon after a sternotomy carries real risk, and no reputable surgeon will bring the date forward to suit a ticket. Book flexible flights.
Questions worth asking the surgeon
How many of this operation does your unit do in a year? Will you be operating, or a colleague? What is your unit's typical intensive care stay for this procedure? Which device are you recommending, and why that one?
A surgeon who answers those readily is telling you something useful. So is one who does not.

Is cardiac surgery in India safe?
Accredited Indian cardiac units report outcomes comparable with Western centres, and the high-volume ones perform more bypasses annually than most European hospitals. What matters is the specific unit rather than the country: its annual volume for your procedure, and who is actually operating.
Can I fly home with a new valve or stent?
Yes, once your cardiologist clears you. They set the date based on your recovery, not your booking, which is why we recommend flexible return flights.
Should I stop my blood thinners before travelling?
Never change medication without instruction from your treating doctor. Send us your current prescriptions with your reports so the hospital can advise before you fly.
What if I need a pacemaker as well?
It can usually be done in the same admission, which is considerably cheaper and easier than returning. The surgeon decides what is safe to combine.
