India issues a dedicated Medical Visa. For most nationalities you can apply online, it runs 60 days from arrival with triple entry, and it can be extended through the FRRO if your treatment takes longer. The document that unlocks the whole process is a letter from the hospital treating you.
Do not travel for surgery on a tourist visa
Indian hospitals record the visa status of international patients, and they have been instructed not to admit patients for planned surgery who are in the country on tourist status. People still try it to save time. What happens is that they arrive, the hospital declines to admit them, and they lose both the airfare and the treatment window.

If we are arranging your treatment, we obtain the hospital invitation letter, check every detail on it against your passport before it goes anywhere near an application, and prepare the FRRO extension with the treating team if your stay runs long.
What we cannot do is influence the outcome. Visa decisions are made by the Government of India, and no facilitator, agent or hospital can guarantee approval. Be careful of anyone who says otherwise or asks for money to arrange one.
